Leib Langfus
Polish rabbi
Leib Langfus was a Polish rabbi who played a significant role in documenting the atrocities of the Holocaust. Prior to his deportation, he served as a rabbi and Dayan in Maków Mazowiecki. In 1942, he was forcibly taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where he was assigned to work as a Sonderkommando, a position that would ultimately inform his crucial historical accounts.
Langfus's legacy lies in the diary he kept while imprisoned, which was later discovered in the grounds of Birkenau. The diary was published as part of "The Scrolls of Auschwitz," a collection of testimonies from the concentration camp. His writings are considered a vital historical resource, providing invaluable insights into the experiences of the Sonderkommando and the broader context of the Holocaust. The discovery of Langfus's diary, along with seven other caches of documents found between 1945 and 1980, has significantly contributed to the understanding of this period in history.
