Amram Qorah

Last chief-rabbi of Yemen's Jewish community

Amram Qorah was a prominent figure in Yemen's Jewish community, serving as the last Chief Rabbi from 1934. He assumed this role following the passing of Rabbi Yihya al-Abyadh, Resh Methivta, and held the position for approximately two years. During his tenure, Qorah played a significant role in the community, although the specifics of his accomplishments during this time are not well-documented.

Qorah's lasting legacy is his book, Sa'arat Teiman, which provides a comprehensive history of the Jews of Yemen and their culture. The book spans over 250 years, from the Mawza exile to the mass immigration of Yemenite Jews to Israel in the mid-20th century. Although Qorah did not live to see the publication of his work, his son ensured that his father's contributions were shared with the world by publishing the book posthumously. Through Sa'arat Teiman, Qorah's impact on the understanding of Yemen's Jewish community and their history continues to be felt.
